Mountains of the Moon University

  • MMU is a not-for-profit educational institution in Western Uganda. An unaffiliated university, MMU promotes a practical hands-on model of learning to address the developmental needs of the region.
  • The One51 Foundation is developing a new MMU Faculty of Agriculture at Lake Saaka in furtherance of the spirit of Horace Plunkett.
  • Through this new Agricultural Faculty, the One51 Foundation and MMU promote a new model of university free of ethnic, religious or other affiliations as a key educational and developmental initiative for their home region.
  • The objective is to develop the human resource potential of Uganda and tackle many of the country's development challenges.
  • The academic courses focus on horticulture, public administration, education, business and public health.
  • The Western Region is a very fertile part of Uganda with great potential both of feeding much of the country but also of establishing value added products such as flowers and vegetables, fruit and specialist products such as spices.
  • Graduate students of MMU will be more inclined to tap into the fertile wealth of the region and take up employment in the west which until now has suffered from a serious brain drain to Kampala.
