Social Services

  • The programme has constructed, furnished and equipped a high school which can cater for up to 1,000 students.
  • A Health Centre has been constructed, furnished and equipped and provides medical services for up to 42,000 people.
  • A revolving drug scheme has been set up to ensure availability of anti-biotics and other essential medicines.
  • Drinking water has been provided to the up to 20,000 people through the development of a local spring and piping the water across 17km with 10 public water points.

Development of Coops

  • 9 Primary Savings and Credit Cooperatives have been established with a total membership of 859. Cooperative development strengthens and empowers farmers as well as women economically and socially through establishing saving and credit, irrigation and seed multiplier cooperatives.
  • Three primary irrigation cooperatives have been established at Huruta with 254 members. There are 797 members in the overall cooperative set up to ensure the sustainability of small scale irrigation schemes. Six small scale irrigation schemes covering 230 Ha of land have been set up, including the construction of four gravity based dams and two pump schemes. These schemes enable farmers to have three or four crop production cycles per annum.
  • A seed co-operative has been established with 82 members to ensure the continued supply of improved seeds in the project area.

  • 1,800 farmers received training.

Livestock

  • One Veterinary Health Post has been constructed and over 16,000 livestock have been vaccinated and treated over the last 7 months.
  • 1,338 households received improved poultry.
  • 235 modern beehives were distributed to191 farmers.

Agro Forestry & Natural Resource Management

  • Over 2 million tree seedlings have been produced.
  • 21 km of gullies have been treated to conserve the soil.
  • 179 Ha of degraded area have been enclosed and planted for rehabilitation.
  • 56 farmers are managing individual and communal nurseries.
  • 37 Rainwater harvesting ponds have been set up to enable drip fed irrigation.

Crops

  • 2,300 farmers have received improved vegetable seed.
  • 3,800 farmers received improved cereal and bean seed.
  • 67,000 Enset seedlings were distributed to over 1,100 beneficiaries.
  • 117 on farm demonstrations have been conducted to introduce new ideas and technologies.

HIV/AIDS

  • 2 awareness workshops given to 1,001 participants to raise awareness on the means of transmission and methods of prevention of HIV and Aids.
  • Materials and information have been provided to schools and community clubs.
