Friends in Ireland, South Africa

  • Across rural South Africa, Friends in Ireland are working on the provision of hospice care for those dying from HIV/Aids and facilities for the care, feeding and registration of orphans. There are hundreds of orphans in the foothills of the Drackensburg Mountains, many of whom are HIV positive and have no access to medical care.
  • One51 Foundation is supporting Friends in Ireland and its partner organisations to take these children into care homes managed by foster mothers. Many children in these care homes are HIV-positive and will not live to see their adult years. In addition to primary care for these orphans, Friends in Ireland ensures the provision of Anti Retro Viral (ARV) drugs to HIV Positive children, enabling them to live longer and healthier lives.
  • Many orphans in Kwa Zulu Natal are presently dependent on food aid. With support from One51 Foundation and Friends in Ireland, they have begun to grow their own food and hope to become self reliant.
  • Orphan Headed Households are provided with food, protection and registration through Friends in Ireland.
  • Working through foster mothers, community volunteers and local religious organisations, Friends in Ireland have expanded their programme of community-based care centres and hospices for HIV/Aids victims in South Africa to the rural slums of the Eastern Cape, Kwa Zulu Natal.
  • In support of this initiative, the One51 Foundation is providing for the construction of a Hospice and Orphan Care Centres and a Healthcare clinic (see photo) for those affected by HIV and Aids at Lusikisiki in Kwa Zulu Natal.
